Local SEO in 2025: How to Rank #1 on Google Maps

UmanMedia Team·February 24, 2025·8 min read

Google Maps is the first thing customers see when they search for a local business. If you're not in the top 3, you're invisible. Here's the complete playbook we use to get clients there.

Why Google Maps Rankings Matter More Than You Think

When someone searches "accountant near me" or "best restaurant Bucharest," the first thing they see is the Local 3-Pack — those three businesses Google shows at the top of the page with a map. Studies show that over 44% of clicks go to these three results. If you're not there, most searchers never see you.

The good news: ranking in the Local 3-Pack is more about consistency and effort than budget. Here's the exact process we follow.

Step 1: Claim and Fully Complete Your Google Business Profile

This sounds obvious, but we see incomplete profiles all the time. Log into Google Business Profile (business.google.com) and fill in every single field:

  • Business name (exact match — no keyword stuffing)
  • Correct category (primary + secondary categories)
  • Full address and service area
  • Opening hours including holidays
  • Phone number (local area code preferred)
  • Website URL
  • Business description (750 characters — use your main keywords naturally)
  • Upload at least 20 photos: exterior, interior, team, products, work examples

Step 2: Get More (and Better) Google Reviews

Reviews are the single biggest ranking factor in local search. Businesses with more recent, high-quality reviews consistently outrank competitors even with better websites.

How to get more reviews ethically:

  • Create a short direct link: google.com/search?q=[your-business-name] — then click "Write a review"
  • Ask every happy customer immediately after completing a job (in person, via SMS, or in a follow-up email)
  • Add a QR code to receipts, business cards, and your front door
  • Respond to every review — positive and negative — within 24 hours

Aim for a minimum of 25 reviews with an average above 4.5 stars before expecting strong rankings.

Step 3: Build Consistent NAP Citations

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-references your business details across the web. If your address appears differently on different websites (abbreviations, suite numbers, etc.), it creates confusion and hurts rankings.

List your business consistently on: Yelp, Facebook, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yellow Pages, and any industry-specific directories. Use the exact same format everywhere.

Step 4: Optimise Your Website for Local Keywords

Your website reinforces your Google Business Profile. Add your city + service to your title tags, H1 headings, and throughout your content. Create a dedicated page for each location you serve. Embed your Google Map on your contact page.

Step 5: Post Weekly on Google Business Profile

Most businesses don't know you can post updates, offers, and events directly on your Google Business Profile — and these posts influence rankings. Post at least once per week with a photo and a call to action.

How Long Does It Take?

With a complete profile and an active review-generation strategy, most local businesses start seeing movement within 4–8 weeks. Reaching the top 3 typically takes 3–6 months of consistent effort.
