What Is AI Engine Optimization and How It Differs From SEO
AI engine optimization is the work of getting your business named inside answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. This article shows how it differs from SEO and what to change first.

In this article
A dentist types "best dentist for nervous patients in my city" into ChatGPT. The answer names three clinics. Hers is not one of them, even though her website sits on page one of Google for "dentist". This gap is why people ask what AI engine optimization is and how it differs from SEO. Short answer: SEO earns a position in a list of links; AI engine optimization earns a mention inside a written answer. The two share a foundation, but they are measured differently and some of the work is different.
What Is AI Engine Optimization?
AI engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI systems to find, understand and quote. Those systems include ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and the AI Overviews box that Google shows above regular results. You may also see it called generative engine optimization (GEO). The two names describe the same job.
These tools do not show ten links and let the reader choose. They write one answer, often with a few sources listed beside it. If your business is not in that answer, the reader may never see your name. For the full picture of how assistants pick who to mention, see AI Search Visibility: How Assistants Choose Who to Mention. This article focuses on the comparison with SEO.
How AEO Differs From SEO
| Question | SEO | AI engine optimization |
|---|---|---|
| What is the goal? | A high position in a list of links | Being named or cited in a written answer |
| What does the reader see? | Ten results and a choice | One answer, a few sources |
| What is rewarded? | Relevance, links, page quality, speed | Clear facts, consistent details across the web, pages that answer a question directly |
| How is it measured? | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Mentions and citations for test questions; calls and enquiries that mention an assistant |
| How stable are results? | Fairly stable between updates | Answers can change from one day to the next and between users |
| Who controls the outcome? | Mostly your site and your links | Your site plus every third-party page that describes you |
The last row matters most. A search engine ranks your pages. An assistant forms an opinion of your business from many sources: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, news and forum posts. If those sources disagree about your address, services or prices, the assistant has less reason to trust any of them.
What Stays the Same
Most AI tools that answer current questions run a web search in the background and read the pages that come back. So the basics of SEO still decide whether you are even considered:
- Pages that can be crawled and are not blocked by mistake.
- A fast, mobile-friendly site (see Core Web Vitals in Plain Words).
- A separate page for each service, written for a real customer question (see How to Write Service Pages That Rank).
- A complete, accurate Google Business Profile for local businesses.
- Genuine reviews, which both search engines and assistants read.
A business with weak SEO rarely does well in AI answers. A business with strong SEO is not guaranteed a mention, which is why the extra work exists.
What to Change for AI Answers
These steps are specific and can be done without special tools.
- Answer the question in the first lines. Put the direct answer under each heading, then add detail. An assistant can lift a clear two-sentence answer; it cannot lift a page that opens with a company history.
- State plain facts. Services offered, areas served, opening hours, how pricing works, how long a typical job takes. Vague wording such as "competitive prices" gives an assistant nothing to quote.
- Make your details identical everywhere. Business name, address, phone number and service list should match on your site, Google profile and directories.
- Add structured data. Schema.org markup for your business, services and FAQs tells machines what each part of a page means. It does not force a mention, but it removes guesswork.
- Include a real FAQ. Use the questions customers actually ask on the phone, with answers of two to four sentences.
- Check that crawlers are not blocked. Some sites block AI crawlers in their robots.txt file, sometimes by default through a plugin or host setting. If you block them, you may be removing yourself from those tools. Whether to allow them is your decision, but make it on purpose.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, local press, supplier or partner pages and industry directories all give assistants more evidence. Getting more Google reviews is the easiest place to start.
How to Check Where You Stand Today
Write ten questions a customer might ask, such as "who repairs X in Y" or "how much does Z cost in Y". Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Record whether your business is named, which competitors are named, and which sources are listed. Repeat monthly with the same questions. It takes about an hour the first time, and it gives you a baseline that rankings alone cannot show.
Treat the results as a trend, not a score. Assistants vary their wording and sources, so a single answer proves little.
What AEO Cannot Do
- It cannot buy a place in an answer. Neither a fee nor an ad guarantees a mention.
- It cannot give fast results. Changes to your site can be picked up within days or weeks, while reputation across other sites builds over months.
- It cannot replace SEO or ads. Many buyers still use ordinary search, maps and paid listings, so AEO adds to those channels.
Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed first place in ChatGPT. No one outside the AI companies controls those answers.

Questions and answers
Is AI engine optimization the same as GEO?
In practice, yes. AEO (answer engine or AI engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are two names for the same work: making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and cite. Which term a company uses is mostly a matter of preference.
Should I stop doing SEO and switch to AEO?
No. Many AI tools use web search results as their source material, so strong SEO helps your chances of being considered. Treat AEO as an addition: the same foundation, plus clearer answers, consistent business details and mentions on other sites.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
There is no fixed time. Changes on your own site can be read by AI tools within days or weeks, but building a consistent reputation across reviews, directories and other sites takes months. Anyone quoting an exact date is guessing.
Can a small local business benefit from AI engine optimization?
Yes. People now ask assistants for local recommendations, and assistants rely on Google Business Profile data, reviews and local directories. A small business with accurate details and genuine reviews can be named alongside much larger competitors.
